Our values are inspired by the self empowerment of the ballroom, and as a mutual aid project aim to build spaces we all feel comfortable in. We centre principles of responsibility, collective care and community accountability – and our definition of accountability = aligning our actions with our values.
We seek to co-create safer spaces together, by bravely taking responsibility for our presence; from our digital interactions to being together in person:
Braver Space commitments
- Respect: we show and expect respect between all event attendees, ask before assuming a person’s pronouns
- Consent: we centre awareness of others’ needs and right to privacy, and ask consent from others before physical touch and seeking/sharing information
- Safety: No violence, harassment, bullying, threatening behaviour or abuse (physical or emotional) will be tolerated, including anti-Blackness, racism, transphobia, homophobia, ableism, fatphobia, ageism, sexism, or any other form of prejudice.
- Working through challenges: When we make mistakes we take responsibility, we honor and validate our own experience, and honor that someone else’s experience does not invalidate our own. We are unable to support behaviour which centres ourselves at the expense of others
Thank you for joining us and for co-creating our safer space together. For any questions about our working approaches, please contact house.ball.scotland[at]gmail.com. We are a tiny part time team, please bear with us for response times!
Love, HBS
